Centered around a shared interest in how human life is enmeshed with the natural world, Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi (Indonesia), Zen Teh (Singapore) and Zulkifli Lee (Malaysia) present works that delve into entanglements between the human and non-human. The exhibition explores ideas of tension, balance and the paradoxes that exist in our relationship with the world around us.
The artists engage with living organisms, found materials and the workings of natural phenomena in their artistic processes. By sharing agency with nature, the narratives and histories embedded within these materials are given the space to surface, unveiling the latent potential in them to uncover facets of other living realms that are often overlooked. Marks and traces of these engagements manifest in installations, paintings, moving images and photography. The works speak beyond the places they came from, and reflect on how humans can relate and respond to nature in a manner fostered on understanding, collaboration and co-dependence.
Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi
Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi (b.1985, Indonesia) investigates the interconnected nature of ecologies, the world of microorganisms and ideas surrounding decomposition and life. Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Environmental Science at Universitas Indonesia, Syaiful draws upon scientific knowledge as a conceptual foundation for his artistic practice. His works demonstrate the intersection of art and science and often feature his engagement with natural organisms like mycelium, lichen and moss. Syaiful has exhibited in Indonesia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, France, Italy, Belgium and Hong Kong.
Zen Teh
Zen Teh (b.1988, Singapore) is an artist and educator interested in man’s relationship with the natural world. Her art practice spans photography, sculpture and installation art. Teh has initiated collaborative interdisciplinary projects with artists, arts professionals and scientists to explore the impact of human activity on natural environments. Teh’s works have been showcased locally and regionally in countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan and China. She was conferred the Young Artist Award by The National Arts Council, Singapore in 2021. She was an artist-in-residence at the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany in 2023.
Zulkifli Lee
The practice of Zulkifli Lee (b.1978, Malaysia) uses a material-based language to explore the dynamics between personalised and impersonalised forms, as well as the beauty and paradoxes present in our relationship with nature. Bridging Islamic aesthetic philosophies with contemporary principles, Zulkifli references traditional Islamic and Malay folk art to create minimal yet intricate compositions, often incorporating systematic and rhythmic geometric patterns. He embraces the element of chance and submits to the naturally occurring properties of the materials he works with, sharing the creation process with nature itself. Zulkifli is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and has exhibited in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom.
