Established in 2013, the Singapore Chinese Music Federation (SCMF), proudly celebrates its 10th Anniversary with the 3rd Singapore Chinese Music Festival 2023 from 20 August to 10 September 2023.
The key highlight of the festival is the SCMF’s 10th Anniversary Gala Concert Heartstrings performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and led by 1993 Cultural Medallion recipient and SCMF President Dr Tay Teow Kiat. Also joining Tay in conducting the concert would be SCMF Council Member, 2002 Young Artist Award Recipient and SCO Principal Conductor Mr Quek Ling Kiong.
The programme of the concert will feature Rejoice by the pioneering late composer Yeo Puay Hian, written for plucked string ensemble, Symphonic Floras by young local composer Phang Kok Jun and Wang Chenwei’s Lion City Rhapsody, a work that is based off Hokkien nanyin music and incorporates characteristic instruments associated with the five largest Chinese dialect groups in Singapore. This unique work involves the participation of musicians from the Nam Hwa Teochew Music Ensemble and the Siong Leng Musical Association, who will perform Teochew music and Hokkien nanyin music in the work respectively.
Other highlights of the concert include renowned dizi soloist Prof. Zhan Yongming with his masterful rendition of piece Spring at Jiangnan and 2004 Young Artist Award Dr Ling Hock Siang, performing the ubiquitous Reflections of the Moon on Erquan on the erhu.
