Esplanade Presents
8 Mar 2026, Sun, 5pm
(Intermission: None)
Esplanade Annexe Studio
Known for their cathartic live shows featuring their massive polyphonic yet delicately arranged music, Chinese post-rock giants WANGWEN make a return to Singapore after almost a decade for a glorious night of instrumental splendour.
Founded in 1999 in Dalian, China, WANGWEN is often mentioned in the same breath as post-rock icons such as Mogwai, Tortoise and Mono, and has been the standard bearers of Chinese post-rock for over two decades. Together, the six members—guitarists Xie Yugang and Geng Xin, bassist Xu Zengzheng, drummer Zhou Lianjiang, keyboardist Zhang Yanfeng, and trumpet and baritone player Huang Kai—have released 12 studio albums, the most recent being the live collection All Yesterday’s Parties to commemorate the band's 25th anniversary.
WANGWEN has toured their brand of melancholic beauty and intense live shows to venues across Asia and Europe, and now they come to Singapore once again for another unforgettable show.
WANGWEN
Widely regarded as the leading instrumental rock band in China, WANGWEN was formed in 1999 in Dalian, a northern coastal city. The six-piece outfit comprises guitarists Xie Yugang and Geng Xin, bassist Xu Zengzheng, drummer Zhou Lianjiang, keyboardist Zhang Yanfeng, and horn player Huang Kai. To date, they have released twelve studio albums and a 25th-anniversary live compilation, crafting a warm, humanistic sound out of the stark, wintry tones of the northern coast.
WANGWEN has embarked on multiple large-scale tours across Europe and Asia, bringing their music to over 20 countries and regions. Their delicate yet powerful live performances have won the admiration of audiences around the world. Known for their diligent and unassuming creative spirit, the band continues to push boundaries—not only standing as a definitive name in Chinese post-rock and instrumental rock, but also maintaining an active presence on the international stage. In 2025, WANGWEN collaborates with a string ensemble to present an immersive panoramic live experience, marking yet another leap in their musical expression and evolution.
