Rick Lau is a Hong Kong-Chinese Australian musical theatre singer-actor/cabaret artist of Chiuchow descent who grew up in Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Kowloon.
His favourite Chiuchow dishes are 卤水鸭 (Chiuchow Braised Duck) and 芋泥 (Sweet Yam Paste). An odd family tradition of his is to seek advice from Wong Tai Sin Temple’s fortune sticks on every decision, from starting a business to immigration and even relationships. Rick has never been to his hometown, but he remembers his family used to send money and clothes back to Chiuchow every Chinese New Year.
His favourite Chiuchow phrases are: Paa3 Saa3 Nia4 Si4 (说三道四 / Nonsense), Dam3 Baai2 Zi3 (白痴仔 / Idiot)
He graduated from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art, Australia) in Musical Theatre. His main professional theatre credits in Australia include Miss Saigon (“Engineer” (1st understudy), Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair The Musical, Box & Quotations from Chairman Mao, The Popular Mechanicals, Empress of China, The River Skaters, Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens and Naked Boys Singing etc.
In Hong Kong his credits include Freespace x HK Repertory’s The Impossible Trial, Yat Po Singers’ Our Immortal Cantata, Om Encounter, Save the Next Song for Me and Pica Pica Choose, Leon Ko’s The Originals, HK Sinfonietta’s The Passage Beyond in Concert and The Amazing Filmphony, City Contemporary Dance Company‘s Home Sweat Home, Actors Family’s Cinematic Memories on Train No.5, The Good Person of Szechwan, Chung Ying Theatre’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and The Underpants, HK City Chamber Orchestra’s Bug Symphony, HK Arts Festival’s June Lovers, 3AMI’s Smokey Joe’s Cafe and The Pajama Game, and HK Ballet’s Cinderella, Swan Lake, Carnival of the Animals and Sleeping Beauty.
Rick has produced, co-written and performed in 12 cabaret shows: LauZone (nominated for Best Actor at the 2022 HK Theatre Libre Awards), Tri Ka Tsai, The Farewell Comeback Tour, Rick Lau’s Lonely Hearts Club Hour, My Queer Valentine, When Rick Met Marsha…, The 3 Singing Bitches, My Generation, Men In Love, SunRice, I know where I'm going... I think, and How Now Rick Lau (commissioned by the Sydney Opera House) in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and West End London.
Rick was recently the singing voice for the lead villain King Magnifico in the 2023 Disney animated film Wish (HK version).
