In Swar Pravaaham – A Musical Voyage, NUS Indian Instrumental Ensemble takes you on a journey through the evolution of ragas in Indian classical music.
Starting at the root, we trace the evolution of ragas to uncover the many forms that it manifests in today. Beginning with the classical forms of Carnatic and Hindustani music showcasing the traditional roots of the raga and its range of emotions, we uncover the novel manifestations of ragas in its different forms today, highlighting the contrast between the old and new by showcasing their unique signatures and potential for growth.
The performance is encapsulated in the form of a journey through the day with the raga, showcasing how it can evoke different moods and emotions at different times of the day, through the exploration of the nine moods (navarasas).
NUS Indian Instrumental Ensemble
Through the practice and performance of music that is deeply rooted in Indian culture, the NUS Indian Instrumental Ensemble (IIE) provides an open and inclusive platform to stage cultural dialogues with a diverse range of musical genres from across the world. Since its founding as an Indian music group in 1987, IIE has explored various themes that form the basis of Indian music, ranging from the evolution of music in the Indian sub-continent to religion and socio-political dialogues in the South Asian region.
IIE is primarily made up of five musical sections: percussion, plucked strings, violin, keys and vocals. This range of instruments allows IIE to perform music that is representative of the ethnic diversity within India, ranging from the Hindustani music of North India to the Carnatic music of South India. IIE continues to champion the traditional art form within today's cosmopolitan global landscape by grounding itself in the rudiments of Indian classical music while innovating and experimenting through fusing the old with the new.
Currently led by artistic director Mr Nawaz Mirajkar, NUS IIE has staged many successful performances over the years, such as Varnajaalam in 2021, Bodhi in 2022 and Inter/Change in 2023, leaving audiences captivated and mesmerised by the unending possibilities that arise out of modernising the traditional. IIE was awarded the Best Original Work of the Year at the Tan Ean Kim Arts Awards for Sangamam, an original composition that premiered at the 2022 NUS Arts Festival. IIE aspires to keep the torch of Indian classical music burning brightly for many years to come and cultivate its growth and flourishment in Singapore.
