Synopsis

Tailored for absolute beginners, with two left feet or little experience in dance.

 

From 2023, Esplanade’s beloved dance platform, da:ns festival transforms into da:ns focus, an exciting year-round season of five themed weekends of distinct focuses. Each da:ns focus weekend will also be accompanied by introductory dance workshops for all ages.

 

Leading up to da:ns focus: FL/OW – The FULL OUT Weekend taking place on 1 – 3 December, these street dance workshops will allow you to immerse yourself in our homegrown street dance scene across 18 sessions on 18, 19 and 25 November, taught by experienced Singapore dance instructors.

 

With genres ranging from hip hop to street jazz, K-pop to party moves, come on down and pick up your next favourite move with us!

 

This programme is presented as part of da:ns focus – FL/OW (The FULL OUT Weekend) on 1-3 Dec 2023, celebrating diverse facets of street dance through performances, workshops, battles and parties.

About the Workshop

Hip hop, a street culture started by African-American communities during the 1970s in New York City, comprises elements such as emcee, DJ, graffiti and breaking. Hip hop dance emerged from the music of Hip hop culture, and in more recent times, has also evolved due to the influences of pop-culture. Learn more about this genre and come train your rhythm, groove and bounce with us!

 

About Kristian Nacional

Kristian Nacional is a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. He started his dance journey back in New York under Epic Motion before starting his own team, The Neighbors, in 2012. The team had numerous achievements under his artistic and choreography direction. A big part of his professional training was in Broadway Dance Center, Peri Dance Capezio Center, PMT Dance Studio which led him to be featured at the U.S. Open headlining ft. Fitz and the Tantrums and Sears industrial w. Derek Hough.

 

While signed under Clear Talent Agency in California, he was part of ImmaBeast Dance Company and taught internationally in Japan, Singapore, Philippines, Korea and locally in California, at Movement Lifestyle and Ruts.

 

Kristian continues to keep growing as a student and teacher while sharing and exchanging his appreciation for dance. Currently, he is an instructor with O School teaching Choreography Level 1 open classes.

 

About O School

O School is a performing arts centre, established as a social enterprise in 2006 under the purview of MCCY with Institution of A Public Character (IPC) status effective from 21 November 2016.

 

O School aims to identify and develop youth dance talents and help grow the Singapore dance market, in order to help these talents build sustainable careers. To this end, O School has consistently developed various dance curriculums, coached institutional dance teams, as well as produced national and international events. In addition, O School also believes in developing the arts scene in Singapore by creating events to develop and showcase talents. O School has been actively creating avenues for dance enthusiasts to showcase their skills and techniques.

About the Workshop

Mixing the grooves of street dance with the lines and extensions of jazz, street jazz has grown in popularity over the years and is often featured in today’s American pop industry, adopted by some of the biggest industry players such as Madonna, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and more. Come learn more about this genre with instructor Ryan Martawibawa!

 

About Ryan Martawibawa

With over six years of expertise in teaching street jazz and contemporary styles, Ryan has choreographed competitively and institutionally for shows across the world. Trained in various styles, he has also competed with Chicago's The Puzzle League for two seasons on stages such as World of Dance.

 

About Converge Studios

Converge Studios operates across two branches, Dhoby Ghaut and Potong Pasir, serving as a sanctuary for dance enthusiasts of various levels and experiences. With more than 50 open classes a week to choose from, and an assembly of the most passionate, professional and personal instructors, there is always a class appropriate for everyone regardless of their concentration, level of experience, or training requirement. Housing a faculty of more than 50 instructors, each a specialist in their own genres, the studio strives to create what is truly a convergence of some of the best and most relevant in the industry.

About the Workshop

Open choreography classes entail instructors utilising the techniques of all their dance styles to teach and unlock a dancer’s potential. In this open choreography class, instructor Lee Wen will draw from her experience in street dance, contemporary, Afro House and more to guide you through various movements.

 

About Lee Wen

Lee Wen is a dancer, instructor and choreographer, previously the dance captain (2018 – 2019) for New Revolving Age (NRA), a well-known dance crew that also served as Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s hip hop club. While serving her term, she choreographed several performances for the club as well as items for NRA’s student production, Surge: The Knots.

 

She has competed in Super24 2018 and 2019 under NRA and clinched 2nd place with Orion in World Supremacy Battlegrounds 2019 and Juvenile in Jambouree 2018. Lee Wen has been with Danz People since February 2020 teaching Girls Style and Open Choreography to adults and youth, as well as a faculty member of the kids department teaching kids from 4-12 years of age.

 

Her goal is to provide a safe and conducive platform for dancers to grow, learn and express themselves.

 

About Danz People

Danz People makes dance accessible to young people and adults through dance training, arts education, and community outreach programmes. Their mission is to create quality dance programmes, to provide dance education opportunities to the public, to encourage collaboration within the dance community, and to speak of the importance of the arts in all our lives.

 

Danz People’s curriculum includes hip hop, jazz and contemporary catered to both children and adults, seasoned and novice dancers, with courses for beginners as well. A recital is staged annually to allow all students to experience performing in a theatre setting, and to grow in more ways than one. Danz People is committed to the education of dance through their extensive curriculum and experience.

About the Workshop

The class will revolve around dance’s application to music— precise movement with strict attention to nuances in songs, while paying attention to details of quality and strength in movement. This class will focus overall the engagement of the body, and hopefully joy in the course of movement.

 

About Popo

Having learned from the seasoned and inspiring and being trained in various genres, Popo has combined all elements in his training to embody a distinct style rooted in mesmerising lines and quiet strength. In life and in his creative delivery, he does his best to mirror himself in his physical movement, with an aim to always uplift not simply others and his own craft, but also the heart.

 

About Legacy Dance Co.

Legacy Dance Co. is one of Singapore's premier dance companies, started by a group of friends with the vision of cultivating communities through dance.

 

With a faculty of over 50 vastly experienced teachers, Legacy has served over 10,000 students, helping forged numerous friendships and igniting many dreams.

 

Since its establishment in 2014, the company has produced numerous dance recitals, camps and dance competitions with the purpose of grooming dancers in the local community. Their most recent work is the collaboration with Recognize! Studios and ActiveSG in organising Lion City Dance Convention, a national dance event now in its third year running.

Freestyling can be intimidating, but fret not! Darren’s freestyle class will explore some freestyle tools to help scaffold your creativity into movements. From lines to pathways, and with the rhythm of the music, let Darren show you the possibilities of your own creativity.

 

About Darren Lee

Darren started passion for dance ignited at the age of 13 while attending Bedok View Secondary School, where the guidance and inspiration from his coaches and mentors sparked his unwavering dedication to this art form.

 

With his varied experiences, Darren’s unique dance style has made him a diverse hip hop dancer. During his tenure at Temasek Polytechnic, Darren assumed prominent leadership roles, leading the club as vice-president of Temasek Polytechnic Dance Ensemble (TPDE), allowing him to compete in multiple showcase competitions and create captivating choreographies for performances and productions such as annual TPDE annual dance concert, Graceful Energetic Movement (GEM).

 

About Noooice! Academy

Established in 2021, Noooice! Academy is one of Singapore's first crew studios and is known in Singapore and the region for its exceptional dance training. From experienced professional dancers with impressive careers to some of the most sought-after choreographers in the industry, our teachers are dedicated to ensuring quality in all aspects of dance.

About the Workshop

Dancehall evolved in response to body movements to reggae, an African Caribbean style of music first developed in Jamaica in the 1960s. A style heavily featuring body isolations and percussive hip movements, dancehall is inspired by elements of reggae, however, its music and moves have become popular over time, evolving into its own genre. Come train your stamina and body groove with dancehall!

 

About Madhu Nisa

Madhu has been dancing since the age of nine, dabbling in different dance styles from modern and classical (namely Malay and Indian dance) to street styles such as hip hop and dancehall. She is an eager learner with an affinity to rhythm, love for music and a creative ability to express herself through movement. Currently, she is an instructor with O School teaching Dancehall Foundations and Level 1 open classes.
