The Javanese love of birds is reflected in the well-loved pieces within the Central Javanese gamelan repertory that reference birds and their singing.
Musicians from Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble will present a gamelan gadhon—a reduced ensemble that focuses on the softer instruments of the gamelan and accompanying vocals, bringing to the audience the gentle tones of birdsong in the evening.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places. No tickets will be issued. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Singa Nglaras means “relaxing lion” (the word nglaras means both to “relax” and “to harmonize, tune”). Formed in January 2004 by A/P Jan Mrazek and assisted since 2012 by Thow Xin Wei, the ensemble is supported by the NUS Department of Southeast Asian Studies. Our players include students, alumni, and faculty across NUS, together with members from outside the university. Our primary activity is weekly latihan (practice sessions) where we learn, socialise, and relax to this seriously relaxing music.
