Synopsis

Explore the rich storytelling traditions of Java Island with Malay Heritage Centre’s storyteller Hafiz Rashid. Immerse yourself in the tale of Princess Candra Kirana who gets turned into a keong emas (golden snail) by her jealous sister. Fortunately, Prince Raden Inu Kertapati goes on a journey to save her. Find out if the prince manages to break the curse! During the session, you will also get the opportunity to make your own wayang kulit character!

Officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in June 2005, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) provides wonderful cultural exposure and learning opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests. Situated amidst the Istana Kampong Gelam, Gedung Kuning and the surrounding Kampong Gelam precinct, the Centre acts as a vital heritage institution for the Malay community in Singapore. Through its exhibits, programmes and activities, the Centre hopes to honour the past while providing a means for present-day expression.

 

While it is currently undergoing renovations, MHC continues to bring various programmes and travelling exhibitions to partner venues around Singapore.

Hafiz Rashid is an experienced museum docent, storyteller, and heritage advocate with a deep passion for the history, culture, folklore, and languages of the Malay Archipelago (Nusantara), with a special focus in textiles. A dedicated volunteer at the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) since 2013, he has conducted engaging tours for diverse audiences, earning praise for his ability to bring history to life through storytelling. Hafiz has performed at notable events such as Storyfest at The Arts House and Singapore HeritageFest, and regularly shares stories from the Nusantara at museums and libraries. Recognised for his contributions to the Malay arts and heritage sector, he was among the first recipients of the Teman Warisan award, presented by President Halimah Yacob. His passion extends to sub-ethnic languages and he is an avid collector of Malay textiles, actively deepening his knowledge through workshops and expert engagements.
