Who was Queen Himiko and how was she linked to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu? Prof Deborah Shamoon explains the legend of the shaman queen and talks about how Himiko and other powerful female figures from Japan's mythic past continue to appear in modern popular culture.

Prof Shamoon teaches in the Department of Japanese Studies at the National University of Singapore. Her book, Passionate Friendship: The Aesthetics of Girls’ Culture in Japan, was published by the University of Hawaii Press in 2012.

Fascinated by Himiko? Consider attending Himiko: Memories of the Sun Goddess, a production by Suntory Hall on 20 May, Friday, 7:30pm at Concert Hall. This theatrical concert experience brings together music and dance, traditional and classical art forms, the East and West.
