Synopsis

Nam Hwa Teochew Opera proudly presents the hilarious Teochew opera Getting a Matchmaker to Find a Husband! In this comedic tale, the vain Meiniang pressures her husband, Lin Shao, into writing a divorce letter before happily returning to her mother’s home, where she spins elaborate stories to manipulate her greedy mother. Eager for a wealthy match, her mother calls upon three matchmakers, each bringing their own amusing and exaggerated flair to the situation. 

 

Starring 11-year-old Clarissa See, a Little Plum Blossom award recipient at the 28th Chinese Children's Opera Festival, this lively performance is not to be missed.

Founded in 1963 by avid Teochew Opera fans, Nam Hwa Opera (NHO) has become one of Singapore’s most prominent and prolific Teochew opera companies. Its mission to preserve, develop and promote traditional Teochew opera as an integral part of Singapore’s rich heritage. 

 

In 2020, NHO was conferred the inaugural The Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award by the National Heritage Board. In 2022, Guangdong Chao Opera Theatre in China invited NHO to jointly establish the Guangdong Chao Opera Institute Singapore Teochew Opera Heritage Centre. 

 

NHO is also home to the Nam Hwa Teochew Music Ensemble and the Yeo Khee Lim Teochew Culture Research Centre.
