The Tang Dynasty (7th to 10th century A.D) is often regarded as the golden age in Chinese history.
What was trending back then in terms of fashion and dressing choices, more than a thousand years ago? Zi De Guqin Studio will share more about the costumes, dressing styles and make-up techniques for women during the Tang Dynasty. They will also perform a short demonstration of their full-scale production What is Qin?, which takes place at Esplanade on 8 & 9 Feb as part of Huayi 2025.
Audience members are welcome to join in the fun by showing up in Tang Dynasty costumes. For those who would like to try out the outfits, fret not: you may get a chance to dress up during this event itself. Do not miss out on this fun and informative sharing session!

Zi De Guqin Studio

Established in 2014 in Shanghai, China, Zi De Guqin Studio is one of the most unique contemporary traditional Chinese music ensembles, featuring young musicians in traditional Chinese attire playing traditional Chinese instruments. The studio is dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese music and culture, with a focus on the guqin (a plucked seven-string instrument with a history of over three millennia). Their refined Eastern traditional aesthetics has brought about the “ancient painting music” trend on the internet, showcasing the profound cultural heritage of China and the cultural confidence of Chinese youth today.
Starting in 2020, Zi De Guqin Studio presented the What is Qin? – Tang Dynasty concert series nationwide in China. In 2023, they launched the What is Qin? – Song Dynasty concert series. Dressed in Tang dynasty costumes, the musicians evoke the imagery of characters from ancient paintings, playing the guqin, Chinese flute, gu zheng and drum to entertain their audience. Their repertoire is rearranged and reinterpreted based on traditional pieces, combining the essence of ancient times with innovative sounds.
