An auditory kaleidoscope awaits as the Tanjong Katong Secondary School Choir presents a concert that traverses the globe and the ages.
The journey commences in the Renaissance heartland of Europe. The intricate architecture of early Italian madrigals (Io mi son giovinetta and Madonna, sua mercé, pur una sera) demands a cappella mastery, showcasing interwoven vocal lines that paint vivid pictures of youthful longing. This is immediately followed by a moment of reverent repose with the sacred Latin motet, Ave Verum Corpus.
From Europe, the choir flows toward the East and the South, immersing itself in vibrant global expressions. The programme pulsates with the raw, rhythmic energy of the Japanese fishermen’s work song, Sohran Bushi, and unearths deeply personal stories within the contemporary Chinese choral art songs 《田园故乡》 and 《远念》, which evoke powerful nostalgia for home and memory. The exploration of Southeast Asia continues, showcasing the distinct cultural textures of the Malay Choral Suite and the unique, captivating sounds of the Cordillera region in the Philippines, represented by Iddem-Dem Mallida.
The stunning medley of Broadway and film hits, such as Go the Distance and Defying Gravity, reflects dynamic vocalism while embracing the spirit of unyielding resilience and the quest for something greater. Paired with the reflective modern ballad Memories and the iconic American folk blues of Sixteen Tons, the programme ultimately affirms shared human hopes and powerful expressions.
