Esplanade Presents
18 May 2026, Mon, 7.30pm
(Intermission: None)
Esplanade Concert Hall
The Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) Choir presents a diverse programme of choral works that bring words to life through music. Blending styles, languages, and traditions, the concert offers an engaging experience for audiences who appreciate both musical expression and literary depth.
An atmosphere of serenity opens the programme, as Rheinberger’s Abenlied evokes the stillness of nightfall, while Alfvén’s Aftonen gently captures the transition from day to evening. Reflections on love and longing follow in Forbes’ Come Back to Me, My Love and Elgar’s My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land, which explore the introspective yearning for an absent beloved.
Prinsloo’s Salve Regina offers warmth and reassurance, expressing trust and hope through the Marian prayer. A choral suite by acclaimed Japanese composer Ko Matsushita which conveys emotions and folk narratives through nuanced texture and tone.
The programme concludes with a change of pace, featuring uplifting arrangements of familiar melodies that celebrate the joy and passion of making music. The NYJC Choir invites you to enjoy an evening of rich choral colours, expressive storytelling, and musical diversity.

Nanyang Junior College Choir
The Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) Choir is a dynamic mixed youth choir that has been under the direction of Mr Terrence Toh since 2010. Under Mr Toh’s guidance, the choir has grown into a vibrant community of young choristers committed to artistic excellence. Over time, this journey in music making has brought them to life-enriching experiences in the local and international choral music scene.
The choir has been featured in numerous prestigious collaborations and performances. In particular, the choir has previously performed in Esplanade’s Limelight series in 2013 and 2018, marking significant milestones in its artistic journey. This year, the choir is delighted to be back at Esplanade as part of the Limelight series.
Locally, since 2013, the choir has consistently been awarded the Certificate of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation. Additionally, it has also performed with the Singapore Lyric Opera in the annual Gala Concerts in 2015 and 2016. The choir has also collaborated with numerous school choirs through combined concerts and choral exchanges, reflecting its active contributions to Singapore’s arts landscape. Internationally, it has clinched gold awards at the Festival of Songs in Olomouc, Czech Republic, as well as the International Choir Competition Riva del Garda in Italy.
Joining them on stage will be the alumni choir, the Nanyang Chorale. Comprising alumni from various graduating cohorts, the Nanyang Chorale serves as a platform for former choristers to continue pursuing their musical journey while giving back to the choir community they adore. The chorale made its first performance as a guest choir with the NYJC Choir in 2018, marking the start of a meaningful collaboration between the alumni and current members. Most recently, the two choirs held a joint concert at Victoria Concert Hall in 2024.
More than a school co-curricular activity, the NYJC choir is a close-knit family of choristers, where the young singers and an inspiring conductor full of energy and fervor for music-making continue to strive to make greater breakthroughs in their pursuit for choral excellence. More importantly, the choir will stay true to what they are—a family of singers that makes beautiful music together.
