Founded in the 1980s as a military band and restructured as a concert band in 2001, the Ang Mo Kio Secondary School Concert Band has grown into a dynamic ensemble of over 80 young musicians. Under the guidance of resident conductors Mr Daniel Kiang and Mr Desmond Chow, the band has maintained a tradition of musical excellence, earning Gold Awards and Certificates of Distinction at consecutive Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentations since 2005.
The band's programme centres on nurturing a love for music-making and cultivating lifelong appreciation for the arts. Members receive systematic training in instrumental performance and music theory, enhanced by diverse musical experiences including concerts, public performances, masterclasses, and exchanges with local and overseas schools that contribute to their artistic and personal development.
The band has presented varied repertoires across multiple genres at prestigious venues including the Esplanade Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall, and Singapore Botanic Gardens. The band also actively serves the wider community through collaborations with the National Parks Board for the Singapore Garden Festival and Singapore Night Festival, and performances at the Istana during National Day Open House.
The band regularly participates in national and community events, including National Day Observance Ceremonies. A significant milestone came in 2024 when it was invited to perform at the National Day Parade alongside other secondary schools and the Singapore Armed Forces Band. In 2025, the band continued expanding its musical horizons through local and international exchanges, masterclasses by the Nonesuch Reed Quintet and Dr Leonard Tan, joint performances with the Alumni Band, and participation in charity fundraising events.
