Synopsis

Insomnia cafe, Exit Musik, Subvert sessions, Union Square, Home club–these names and places were pure gold to those in the Drum and Bass scene here in Singapore in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Drum and bass, or more popularly known as D&B, is a genre of electronic music characterized by fast breakbeats with heavy bass and sub-bass lines, samples, and synthesizers. Singapore had a small but thriving D&B sub-culture scene with its heydays in the late 90s & early 2000s. Eschewing the more commercial sounds played in mainstream clubs back then, aficionados of D&B forged a lot of friendships that remained steadfast, albeit with kids in tow these days. Come and get a taste of those heady nights, with DJ Nonsequitur and DJ Aresha as they play two chill sets, with a showcase of photos taken of the scene back then by photographer Ungku Ibrahim, and see why D&B is still winning fans these days with its wicked basslines and infectious beats.

Artist Information

DJ Nonsequitur

Like a superhero leading multiple lives and secret identities, DJ Nonsequitur has to balance the demands of real life and his passion for education and music. Being both a teacher and a DJ is not an easy task, but in each aspect, he finds a synthesis of creative energy and purpose. A teacher must often be an entertainer to get his students’ attention. Vice versa, the DJ is an educator, purveyor and preacher of quality music, constantly refreshing his repertoire to broaden the musical knowledge of his audience. His love for D&B motivates him to reach out to the maturing clubbing audience and share with them another great genre of music.

A well-liked DJ in the local D&B scene, Nonsequitur has played alongside top local DJs like, Aresha, Andy Vortex and Subvert, and is part of local D&B crews Subvert and TherapyAsia.

DJ Aresha

Those who have been to any of her gigs will unreservedly agree to proclaim Aresha as Singapore’s “Queen of drum and bass”. DJ Aresha has been flying the junglist flag since 1998, and has a track record that spans the highly acclaimed Barcelona’s Sonar Festival to Singapore’s F1. Aresha has also represented Singapore at the Red Bull Music Academy and has DJ-ed alongside heavyweights such as Kraftykuts, London Elektricity among others.

Ungku Ibrahim

Singapore's underground and nightlife scene in the ’90s would only exist as mental memories if not for the efforts of one of Singapore's earliest nightlife photographers in the trade—Ungku Ibrahim.

A founding member of Colossal photos and one of the most familiar faces behind the camera for many, Ungku has compiled an impressive archive and curriculum vitae since 2005. He has since amassed an extensive portfolio, with his camera lens gracing some of the biggest events in Singapore—this includes ZoukOut, Ultra Music Festival and Future Music Festival to name a few.
