The Irish music and dance traditions both grew out of the rural Irish countryside, where neighbours gathered in houses and danced through the night, with musicians playing tunes in accompaniment.
The tradition has since come a long way, with mega-productions like Riverdance and Lord of the Dance defining the modern sights and sounds of the Irish music and dance tradition.
Gerry Cox, a singer and guitarist from Waterford, Ireland and James Chan, a Singaporean flute player, have been performing together regularly since meeting each other through the local pub music scene. Join them as they share with you the authentic sounds of the Irish musical tradition, bringing you lively dance tunes and songs passed down through the generations.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places. No tickets will be issued. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Gerry Cox
Born and raised in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city, Gerry Cox moved to Australia at the age of 25, where he spent 10 years performing on the Melbourne Irish music scene, both as a solo performer and in a variety of ensembles. After touring to Singapore twice in the late 1990s to perform for the St. Patrick's Day festivities, he relocated here in 2004. Since then, he has performed all over the island and has been a feature of many Irish-themed events, including the annual St. Patrick's Society Ball and St. Patrick's Day Street Festival. In 2011, he performed at Jubilee Hall in Raffles Hotel as the opening act for a concert by internationally acclaimed Irish singer Mary Black, a concert Cox himself helped to organise and promote. He has also been invited to perform at the Residence of the Irish Ambassador on many occasions.
James Chan
James Chan, a Singaporean musician, has been playing Irish traditional music since 2008. He has since performed for various events held by the Irish community in Singapore, including performances at the Residence of the Irish Ambassador, Ireland Fund Singapore, and the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration. In 2018, he became the first Singaporean representative at the All-Ireland flute and tin whistle championships.
