The blues has its roots in the Southern United States, giving musical expression to the hardship of African-Americans. Associated with grittiness and rawness that reflected a life of struggle, the wail of the blues has captivated audiences not only from its place of birth, but the world over. In this performance, harmonica ace Kelvin Ng teams up with guitarist Joe Lee to play some lowdown dirty blues.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places. No tickets will be issued. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Kelvin Ng
With a powerful yet highly musical harmonica style, Kelvin Ng is acknowledged as the premiere blues harmonica man in Singapore. Blessed with a strong and soulful voice, he is a major blues talent in Singapore and the region. Enthusiastic about performing live, he has opened for Robben Ford and shared the stage with various international blues and roots acts such as the Holmes Brothers (US), Harry Manx (Canada) and Dom Turner (Australia).
Additionally, he has performed with local music legends like Jeremy Monteiro, Rex Goh and Siva Choy. As bandleader of Skunk Jive, he has performed in various music festivals such as SingJazz and Mosaic Music Festival, as well as in famous bars like Crazy Elephant and Blu Jaz Cafe.
Highly adaptable to other forms of music, Kelvin has recorded harmonica for Mandarin pop superstars such as Stefanie Sun, Jacky Cheung, Eric Moo and Na Ying. He played on the theme song for local Chinese TV drama series Toa Payoh.
Kelvin is also the only Singaporean to officially endorse Hohner harmonicas, the world’s leading brand in quality harmonicas. This puts him in the league of the best harmonica players in the world who share this prestigious endorsement with the iconic German brand.
Joe Lee
Born and raised in Singapore, Joe Lee pursued his BA (Hons) degree in Jazz at LASALLE College of the Arts and graduated with first class honors. He has amassed a variety of stage experience ever since, including working with the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra (JASSO). He now mainly teaches alongside various other gigs with local jazz names such as Jeremy Monteiro and Chok Kerong.
