Esplanade Presents
22 Jul 2026, Wed, 7.15pm & 8.15pm
(Intermission: None)
Esplanade Concourse
In a city where daily routines are finely calibrated and society moves at a relentless pace, what is it that keeps us up at night? Following last year's sun-drenched summer showcase, The Contra Band Project is turning their gaze inward and exploring how our deepest passions can consume and shape us. The evening moves from light-hearted romance to longing and obsession. Through jazz classics like Cheek to Cheek, Sophisticated Lady and Old Devil Moon, the performance captures the zeitgeist and the human condition for what it really is. Look forward to a beautifully curated set of modern straight-ahead jazz. Featuring exciting arrangements and rich harmonies that mirror the shifting tides of the human heart, the music will carry you seamlessly from playful romance to dark, breathtaking ballads.
The Contra Band Project
The Contra Band Project began in 2024 as the creative brainchild of pianist Rachma Lim and guitarist Ernest Tan. Vocalist Sarah-Kei Lauw subsequently lent her voice to the musical project, adding a unique dimension to their musicality. The project’s philosophy is to celebrate the passion that unites jazz musicians—a love for spontaneity, discovery, kinship and community. Joining them to unravel the endlessly exciting world of jazz are tenor saxophonist Bryan De Rozario, drummer Ting Wei Yap, and bassist Nobu Shiraishi.
