Artist Information

Louis Soliano

Louis Soliano is a pioneer in the local jazz scene-pushing the boundaries of jazz drumming in Singapore. He is also widely regarded as one of the best interpreters of jazz standards, with a vocal style resembling Johnny Hartman and Frank Sinatra. Over his long, illustrious career, he has performed extensively in Singapore and internationally. including for major dignitaries such as President George H.W. Bush Snr. and the late Chinese President Yang Shangkun.

 

Louis has also performed for several Presidents of Singapore-Devan Nair, Wee Kim Wee, S.R. Nathan and Tony Tan. In the past 60 years, he has mentored influential figures in Singapore's jazz scene including Iskandar Ismail, Jeremy Monteiro, Don Gomes, Andrew Lim, Tan Wei Xiang, Eddie Jensen and Jojo Martinez, to name a few. He is the recipient of the COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award (1997), the Sing Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award (2014) and the Cultural Medallion (2018). He also became a fellow of the London College of Music in 2013.

Eugene Ang

Eugene Ang is a jazz guitarist whose musical journey began in classical music before shifting to jazz. He spent two transformative years broadening his musical horizons in New York. He has performed at local festivals such as the Singapore International Festival of Arts, Mosaic Music Festival, Huayi Music Festival and CHIJazz, as well as music festivals in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, China and Laos.

 

As the founding member of jazz band Mellow Motif, Eugene has recorded two albums with the band appearing on MTV, PBS and CNN-Go. He has collaborated extensively with flautist Rit Xu. On a Little Street in Singapore: A Jazzy Conversation (2013). This Too Shall Pass (2019) and Scenes and Stories (2021). In 2022, he joined the Straits Ensemble-a musical collective led by composer and bassist Felix Phang presenting the diverse cultures and styles that define the Singapore sound and recorded the album Connecting Islands with them. In 2023, the Straits Ensemble performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra at the Temasek Foundation SSO National Day Concert.

Anson Fung

Anson Fung is a cross-genre guitarist based in Singapore. Self-taught since age 15, he decided to pursue a career in music and enrolled in LASELLE College of the Arts and was an acclaimed student. He has performed with local and international artists such as Benny Golson, Alemay Fernandez and Jeremy Monteiro.

 

He currently performs as a session guitarist and also leads several groups including his R&B acts, Grind Effect and Anson Road, his Blues band The Blues Initiative, and his Jazz acts, the Anson Fung Organ Trio, Guitar Trio and Quartet.

Tamagoh

Tamagoh is a Singapore-based drummer and long-time member of the Jeremy Monteiro Jazz Band since 1989. He has performed internationally across Asia, Europe and the United States with leading jazz and pop artists.

 

His career spans festival appearances, orchestral collaborations, and performances with internationally recognised musicians. He has received multiple awards for his contributions to music in Singapore.

Tony Makarome

Tony Makarome is a musician and educator at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. A versatile performer on mridangam and bass, he works across classical, contemporary and cross-cultural music traditions.

 

He has premiered works internationally and collaborated with orchestras including the SSO and SCO. He is also an award-winning educator and published writer on music theory and konnakkol.
