This edition features acclaimed trumpeter Peter Evans, known for his explosive technique and boundary-pushing approach to improvisation. A leading voice in contemporary experimental jazz, Evans explores extended trumpet techniques, spontaneous composition, and high-intensity improvisational dialogue. Join him as he shares insights into his artistic practice, creative process, and the evolving language of modern jazz improvisation.
Peter Evans
Master trumpeter Peter Evans is in a league of his own. A composer, trumpet player, improviser and bandleader based in New York City since 2003, his work is highly experimental—cutting across a wide range of modern musical practices and traditions.
Since 2006, Evans has released seven albums including the critically acclaimed More is More and Lifeblood. He has performed internationally across the United States, Europe, Asia and South America, including a debut at the Venice Biennale in 2024.
Evans has worked with some of the leading figures in contemporary music including John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Mary Halvorson, Tyshawn Sorey, Jon Batiste and has collaborated with both the International Contemporary and Wet Ink Ensembles as a performer and composer.
He leads and composes for a range of projects including Being & Becoming, Extra, Symphony, and Pulverize the Sound. As a composer, Evans has been commissioned by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Wet Ink, Yarn/Wire, the Donaueschingen Musiktage Festival, the Jerome Foundation's Emerging Artist Program, and the Doris Duke Foundation. In 2022, Evans was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition.
Alongside his performance and collaborative work, Evans is an active educator in the scene, having conducted masterclasses and workshops on improvisation, composition, instrumental practice and creativity at leading institutions worldwide.
