In 1976, two bands were formed that would change the course of Japanese jazz fusion. Casiopea and T-Square pioneered a sound that blended jazz, rock and pop influences. Combining technical virtuosity with catchy melodies, they continue to shape the sound of instrumental music in Japan and have influenced composers such as Nobuo Uematsu who worked on Final Fantasy and Koji Kondo best known for his contributions to the Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda soundtracks.
Asayake—comprising six jazz musicians from Singapore—was formed to celebrate the intricacy, beauty and energy of Japanese jazz fusion.
