Every Christmas, Cheryl and her mother, sister and helper bake 100 loaves of extremely technical bread. Because of how difficult it is to bake bread—both physically and emotionally—she thinks more people should know about it. She also wants everyone to hear how jealous she gets listening to her good friend Edward Choy on the radio every day. There may also be some sort of time machine. And cake.
Fresh off their first foray into songwriting teamhood for There’s a Dinosaur in the Concert Hall, Cheryl Chitty Tan and Jonathan Shin present an evening of musical theatre originals, featuring selections from previous works such as The Monster in the Mirror and new songs from concepts-in-progress.
Cheryl Chitty Tan
Cheryl is an actor and singer best known for playing Yehenara in Forbidden City (Life! Theatre Award nomination), Juliet in Romeo and Juliet for Shakespeare in the Park and Ivy Chan in Beauty World on stage. On screen, she has starred in Faculty, Derek, Code of Law V, Veil and more. She has a Boh Cameronian Arts Award for Best Lead Performer in a Musical.
As a creative, Cheryl wrote lyrics to songs in the pop musical The Monster in the Mirror, which will be restaged next year, and produced and directed Nick Choo’s Christmas musical Follow the Light. She has received Best Director, Librettist and Overall Production awards from the Short + Sweet KL Festival.
Jonathan Shin
Jonathan Shin performs extensively as a pianist, composing and improvising across multiple genres and styles. His music has been described by The Straits Times as “supremely confident and comfortable in its own skin”.
Jonathan began composing professionally at 22, where his first commissioned work, the song cycle The Other Merlion and Friends, was critically reviewed as “probably the most compelling and worthwhile new work from any Singaporean composer in recent years”. He has since been commissioned by many performing arts centres, ensembles, opera companies and orchestras in Singapore such as Esplanade, Orchestra of the Music Makers and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
Recently, he has turned his focus towards the operatic genre. His latest foray into the genre is Beacon, composed in collaboration with playwright Joel Tan as a commission by The Opera People that will continue to be developed in the coming years.
