Esplanade Concourse
Look forward to a luminous tribute to the musical genius and enduring legacy of Rabindranath Tagore—the Bard of Bengal.
Through Rabindra Sangeet, a body of over 2,500 works shaped by his poetic vision, Tagore forged a profound dialogue with Indian classical traditions, including Saint Tyagaraja’s carnatic legacy. Deeply inspired by Tyagaraja’s devotional intensity, melodic structure and emotive ragas, he reimagined carnatic kritis, honouring their raga frameworks while infusing his own lyrical and philosophical sensibility. Tagore didn’t merely borrow; he reinterpreted them to suit Bengali aesthetics and his “religion of humanity,” preserving Tyagaraja’s spiritual depth while softening rhythmic complexity for broader accessibility.
This performance is a cross-cultural homage to that genius: a radiant confluence of South Indian classical rigor with North Indian poetic nuance. Hear some of these inspirations come alive on veena and sitar, culminating in an original grand finale: a multi-raga jugalbandhi composed by Dr. Manjula Surendra.
Don’t miss this celebration of devotion, artistry, and timeless resonance.
