Discover the history and development of pingtan and its unique artistic charm in this talk by Gao Bowen, Head of the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe. A genre of musical storytelling, traditional pingtan is a popular artform within China’s Jiangnan region. Originating from Suzhou about four centuries ago, the development of pingtan has evolved over the years as it absorbed influences from various cultures. The rise of media and expansion of performing halls have also helped to popularise the art of pingtan, winning fans from businessmen, artists and city dwellers alike.
