Synopsis

‘Lenggang’ has the meaning of being leisurely and walking in a slow and peaceful gait. This Malay dance performance by Montfort Care Goodlife! Bedok offers a reimagination of health and wellness. Moving towards a communal function of dancing, they will use movement to share personal stories during Hari Raya, and build relationships through empathy.

 

Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices towards a more meaningful existence. Expanding on the Malay dance movement motif of ‘lenggang’ which refers to the gentle swaying of arms when walking, this motif offers a symbolic and affective way of taking care of each other.

Tentang Hasyimah Harith

Hasyimah Harith Website | P7:1SMA Website

Hasyimah Harith is a Malay-Muslim female artist trained in Malay folk dance. She performs, choreographs and teaches traditional Malay dance repertoires. Using her body as the starting point, Hasyimah works with the Malay identity and female sexuality to reclaim agency over her body. Her working method involves strategies such as vulnerability, pleasure and confession. She believes in the power of the body to confront and overcome the conditioned shame that is often attached to female sexuality. She advocates for a community-based practice that calls attention to co-creations and solidarity at the heart of relationships.

 

Hasyimah is also a visual arts educator and company manager of P7:1SMA Ltd., a dance company formed in 2016 that uses dance to confront and reimagine the Malay individual’s relationship to their identity.
