Chhau is a dance form that originates from the Purulia region in West Bengal. Traditionally, Purulia chhau dance was patronised by the Baghmundi royal family, but now it is typically featured as a ritual performance during special occasions and festivals in the Hindu calendar. In this talk, learn more about the origins of chhau and the different variations of this traditional dance form.
Sneha Bhattacharyya
Having completed her Master of Philosophy in Social Sciences and PhD in chhau dance of Purulia, Sneha Bhattacharyya is a manager of Project and Research at Contact Base. With a focus on inclusive growth and sustainable development, Sneha’s focuses are in empowering women and uplifting indigenous communities. She is dedicated to using culture as a vehicle for development and analyses its impact on social issues, such as poverty alleviation, gender, wellbeing, inclusivity and global cooperation.
