Synopsis

BOOM (建设繁荣) follows the story of an elderly mother battling to preserve her home and community as residents are coerced into a collective housing block sale, and the ensuing conflict with her son who desires a fresh start.

 

This updated adaptation of Singaporean playwright Jean Tay's 2007 stage play is a poignant tribute to the disappearing heritage sites of Singapore, beautifully captured in the film's charming and bittersweet visuals. It is a moving tribute to the country's rich history and a must-see for audiences seeking a glimpse into the human costs of policy and progress.

Artist Information

Derrick Chew

A proud alumnus of the School of Film & Media Studies (Ngee Ann Polytechnic), Derrick Chew won Best Film at the 20th Singapore International Film Festival for his graduation short film, Conversations.

 

He is also a highly experienced creative producer with over 15 years of producing and directing experience in the theatre and entertainment industry. His mission as an arts activist is to fortify Singapore’s position as a vibrant arts city.

 

For his work in film and theatre, Derrick has been featured prominently on international and local media including BBC, NBC, Channel News Asia and Straits Times.

 

BOOM (建设繁荣) is Derrick’s feature film debut.
