Swayatra takes you through the different phases of human life, called ashrams in Hinduism. This journey will be represented by varied elements of Kathak. The brahmacharya (student) ashram will be reflected through pure Nritya (movement) in the rhythmic pattern Taal Dhamaar, showing mastery over time. The grihasta (household) ashram, will be represented through a Thumri song showing romance. The vanaprasta (retirement) ashram phase is seen through a Sufi piece, highlighting the path towards material detachment, in praise of the almighty. The final phase is that of renunciation, the sanyaasa ashram, showing the full circle of life, from birth to moksha, or liberation into God.
Mask-wearing is optional. However, audiences are encouraged to continue to exercise responsibility and caution, such as wearing masks when in crowded places. No tickets will be issued. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Patang
Formed specifically for Kalaa Utsavam 2022, Patang comprises a group of SIFAS graduates and disciples of Guru Mulla Afsar Khan, who have over a decade of experience under their belt in learning and performing Kathak. The group is now keen to use this opportunity to explore and further develop their choreography and presentation skills. Notable performances by each member include at the Roses of Peace ambassador appointment ceremony in front of President Halimah Yacob (Aishwarya), the Indian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan (Os), Kathak Dual at Gateway Theatre (Priyanshi) and Singapore Indian Arts Festivals (Swathi). Os and Swathi have also been teaching Kathak to young ones for over four years.
