The Singapore Indian Orchestra & Choir (SIOC) is a 37-year-old performing arts group and one of the world’s largest semi-professional groups, showcasing the richness of Indian music with its wide range of traditional and contemporary repertoire. Under the baton of Lalitha Vaidyanathan, PBM, SIOC has redefined the boundaries of Indian music through exciting collaborations with leading local and international composers as well as bringing Singapore’s multi-racial cultural vibrance to the local audience.
SIOC’s orchestral repertoire spans over 100 musical compositions ranging from traditional Carnatic and Hindustani classical music to contemporary multi-ethnic pieces. Its choral group is one of the first to innovatively blend traditional techniques with that of a capella.
Eminent composers have contributed greatly in showcasing SIOC’s richness in different genres of music. These include the late MS Viswanathan, late L Vaidyanathan, TV Gopalakrishnan, Dr L Subramaniam, Rajkumar Bharathy, Bharadwaj, Mohan Vaidya, Rajesh Vaidya and Radha Vijayan.
Over the past three decades, SIOC has premiered many interesting concepts through productions like Vivaldi meets Thyagaraja, Live music for the silent movie Shiraz, a multi-ethnic collaboration called Soundwaves, among many others.
In addition to our regular sold-out performances at Singapore venues such as Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Victoria Theatre, SIOC has had the privilege to perform internationally for festivals such Cervantino International Festival in Mexico and The International Choral Festival in Portugal, as well as locations such as Russia, India, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Sweden, Macau, Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand and Japan.
