The Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) was founded in 1977 as the National Theatre Symphonic Band (NTSB), under the auspices of the National Theatre Trust. In 1992, it was renamed the Singapore Wind Symphony, and embarked on a new era of excellence in music-making, establishing itself as one of the pinnacle ensembles of its kind in Singapore.
The SWS has received numerous accolades and awards at prestigious international music festivals like the World Music Contest (Kerkrade, Netherlands) where it won the Gold award with the highest score (Symphonic Band Division) in 1992 and subsequently First Prize (1st Division) in 2001.
SWS has performed in major concert venues like the Sydney Opera House and the Hong Kong Academy of Performance Arts on numerous international tours. It has also been invited to represent Singapore in important international forums for music like the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relation of Singapore and Thailand in Bangkok, Janitsjarfestivalen in Hamar (Norway), annual conferences of the Asia Pacific Band Directors' Association (APBDA) and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival (Korea).
SWS has collaborated with many renowned composers, conductors and soloist over the years including Jan van der Roost (Belgium), Johan de Meij (Netherlands), Apo Hsu (Taiwan), Joseph Alessi (USA), John Bruce Yeh (USA), Steven Mead (United Kingdom), Joe Burgstaller (USA) and many more. Closer to home, it has shared stage with Singaporean music icons Dick Lee and Jeremy Monteiro as well as prominent local musicians Joanna Dong, Nathan Hartono, Gentle Bones, Sezairi Sezali and acclaimed a cappella group Vocaluptous.
