Schola Cantorum Singapore Ltd. (SCS) was established in 2015 and incorporated in Singapore in 2019 as a non-profit choral collective that provides choral enthusiasts with an open, educational outlook to music and singing, seeking to nurture the next generation of professional musicians, music educators and music lovers. The choir is made up of music professionals and amateur music lovers from all walks of life.
In line with the choir’s vision to bring the best art and art-making to the masses, SCS gives back to the community, serving as the demonstration choir for various conducting masterclasses and workshops. Promoting and supporting excellence in music-making and literacy, SCS has supported various masterclasses at Kodaly Academy of Music (KAM)’s Studiorum Series, as well as at Esplanade’s Voices Festival.
SCS was responsible for numerous world and local premieres, including the first fully-staged Singaporean production of Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman in 2016, as well as showcasing an array of Singaporean works overseas. During the global pandemic, SCS soldiered on and remained active, with performances such as the premiere of Zoltán Kodály’s Esti Dal at the 4th Asia Kodály Symposium 2020 (AKS), an immersive digital performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (Final Movement), presented by the German Embassy Singapore in partnership with the Foundation for The Arts and Social Enterprise, as well as a music video with the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra. As Singapore’s cultural ambassadors, SCS has also played host to various international scholars, conductors and choirs from Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and more.
