Q: What does a maintenance officer do?
Abbas: We ensure a smooth operation and maintenance of the facilities at Esplanade. We do everything, but we will call in a contractor when there is a task that requires a specialised skillset.
Q: How did you get into this job? What skills do you need to have to undertake this job?
Abbas: I studied Mechanical Engineering when I was in school, and this job aligned with my skillset. For this job, we need to have a basic knowledge of electrical facilities, plumbing, air-conditioning and electrical work.
Q: What is the most important part about your job as a maintenance officer?
Abbas: The most important part of this job is to ensure that everything is in good working order. If the equipment is not in good working condition, it will get worse and affect the staff, which then affects their working environment. It will also affect our patrons who visit Esplanade. We aim to carry out preventive measures rather than corrective measures to prevent equipment from breaking down before the issue escalates.
Q: What do you like about this job?
Abbas: I like the process of troubleshooting a problem and fixing it. I find it very satisfying to fix something successfully, especially knowing it makes the end user happy.
Q: What are the character traits needed to do well in this job?
Abbas: To do well in this job, you need to have a strong desire to learn, adaptability to a changing environment and flexibility to acquire new skills. If one is not willing to adapt and grow, they may find themselves becoming 'outdated'.
