Two Guitars
Synopsis
True artistic collaboration is forged over time, rooted in mutual respect and strengthened with a shared creative vocabulary. For veteran Singaporean jazz guitarists Alvin Wong and Joe Lee, years of professional camaraderie and shared musical exploration culminate in Two Guitars, a special duo showcase presented at this year’s Jazz in July. Centred on the concept of intimate "guitar conversations," the performance showcases the duo’s natural, unhurried synergy and improvisational musical dialogue. Their individual playing styles—one grounded in a crisp, lyrical contemporary line, and the other leaning into rich, modern harmonic textures—interlock seamlessly and create a balanced and deeply intuitive dialogue that can only come from years of playing alongside one another.
Across two meticulously curated sets, Wong and Lee will venture beyond the possibilities of the traditional guitar duo format. The repertoire travels a diverse sonic path, experimenting with atmospheric textures enhanced by electronic effects and live loops, transitioning into sophisticated interpretations of classic jazz standards, and retelling fresh, creative arrangements of popular songs. Technically brilliant and effortlessly relaxed, Two Guitars invites the audience to witness an evening of musical conversation—listening, answering, and creative play between two guitar players masterfully performing on their instruments.
