Internationally renowned Hong Kong dance icon Mui Cheuk-yin presents an exquisite and heartfelt solo dance work that explores universal issues.
In Diary VII・The Story Of...... Mui draws from her long relationship with stray cats to invoke ingenious choreography that draws you into a deeply personal exploration of universal issues such as home, country, displacement and migration. Mui leads audiences to find parallels between feline traits and her philosophy in life, and her heartfelt emotions are powerfully expressed through exquisite movements and gestures, accentuated and reinforced by light and shadow, and words and sound.
Mui Cheuk-yin debuted her Diary solo dance series in 1986 as a way of documenting her childhood in China, her physical development and her dance career. Diary has become an intimate and autobiographical collection of dance works that chronicle her life in dance and how, through dance, she has connected with the world. This presentation of Diary VII・The Story Of...... marks Mui’s long-awaited return to Esplanade since she mesmerised audiences in the Esplanade Concert Hall in The Flight of the Jade Bird, presented as part of the Singapore Arts Festival in 2012.
Diary VII・The Story Of...... premiered in 2021 and was awarded the Outstanding Choreography and Best Small Venue Production at the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2022, as well as the Best Performance in Dance at the DarkChat Awards as part of Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2023.
There will be a post-show dialogue conducted in Mandarin.
