This event is over.
For the first time in the Esplanade Concert Hall, Musicians’ Inc. 6 (MI6) and the Voices Festival Choir present their signature blend of camaraderie and adventurousness, with a mix of choral classics, contemporary works and local premieres. In celebration of SG60, this year’s edition shines a spotlight on homegrown artists, and showcases the talent of Singapore’s best youth choristers and choral conductors.
Featuring the island’s most accomplished vocal talent, the Voices Festival Choir is a seasonal collective of auditioned young singers aged 17–26, led by a group of dedicated choral conductors and educators, MI6, who are active performers in the scene. The Festival Choir welcomes a fresh group of youth choristers every year, and provides a unique opportunity for them to learn new aspects of choral singing and grow in their vocal craft. Since 2022, the Voices Festival Choir has gone through educational workshops, rehearsals, and performances, learning from and performing with world-renowned artists ranging from The King’s Singers to The Idea of North. This performance is a culmination of lessons on music-making, community and journeying together, as presented through an eclectic choral repertoire including the works of Americ Goh, Ben Parry, Heinrich Schütz, Jake Runestad, Josu Elberdin, Laura Hawley and Mia Makaroff.
Musicians' Inc. 6 (MI6)
Musicians’ Inc. 6 (MI6) is a group of six Singaporean choral conductors and music educators who have found in each other, a strong friendship through music-making. The group comprises Cherie Chai, Choy Siew Woon, Dawn Yin, Low Xu Hao, Terrence Toh and Yong Chee Foon, all of whom hail from different choral backgrounds and serve actively in Singapore’s education scene as conductors of several primary, secondary, pre-tertiary, tertiary and community choirs. The conductors often collaborate with each other and across schools, to create new learning experiences for young choristers, exploring a wide range of choral repertoire. They share a common dedication towards doing their part in maintaining a healthy and balanced choral ecosystem and are thankful for the privilege of guiding their students through their musical and personal journeys.
Voices Festival Choir
Esplanade’s Voices Festival Choir is an auditioned group of youth choristers aged 17 – 26, who have participated in a series of choral activities during each edition of the festival since 2022. Facilitated by Singaporean choral music educators MI6, the Voices Festival Choir engages yearly in a variety of rehearsal styles during the festival week, deepening their insight on choral music and its collaborative possibilities, before presenting a diversity of choral repertoire to audiences. Thus far, the Festival Choir has learnt from and shared the stage with a number of different choral artists, including The King’s Singers, Die Singphoniker, The Gesualdo Six, London Community Gospel Choir, The Idea of North and MI6 themselves. This year, The Esplanade celebrates the choir’s journey thus far, in a special feature concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
