What is Taste
Synopsis
What is Taste is an expanding body of work by Wu Mali that explores stories and memories encoded in food and food preparation. Through interviews and documentary film, her research traces histories of human migration and localisation.
In these layered narratives, the acts of cooking and eating become ways of remembering, where personal and collective histories unfold against shifting sociopolitical currents.
Casting its focus on the human geography of Cijin Island in Taiwan, the exhibition follows six residents in their recounting of family and personal experiences through gestures of food preparation.
In continuation of her pioneering practice in participatory art, the exhibition becomes a site for gathering and audience participation, inviting sharings of personal stories and creating space for workshops and collective exchange.
