Yanyun Chen and Dave Lim reflect on how childhood discipline is remembered within Singapore’s culture of over-compliance. Shaped by the belief that hardship builds character, discipline—often framed as distinct from punishment—was widely accepted as a way of cultivating obedience and respectability in children.
Lim’s experience, which did not involve physical discipline, offers a counterpoint to a generation for whom such practices were common. For many, these painful memories are later softened through humour to ease fear and reframe enforced compliance as resilience.
This exhibition invites audiences to reflect on their own upbringing: how childhood pain and fear may linger in the body, and how stories of domestic discipline can be acknowledged, healed and reimagined.
Yanyun Chen
Yanyun Chen (b. 1986, Singapore) is an artist whose practice explores how stories are inscribed onto our bodies and rewritten through various mediums. Tracing hurt, grief and time’s slow violence on human and botanical forms, she untangles tenuous social constructs around womanhood and upbringing, hoping to honour the scars carried in our bodies. A recipient of the National Arts Council Young Artist Award (2020), Chen has exhibited locally and internationally.
Dave Lim
Dave Lim (b. 1994, Singapore) is a visual artist and filmmaker. With a background in documentary and research, his works explore conceptual concerns ranging from urbanity and the human condition, what it means to live and die in the city, and the form of truth through comedy and reflection. He is a recipient of the National Youth Film Awards (2020), and co-runs Third Street Studio, an independent production company.
