In conjunction with the company’s Golden Jubilee celebrating 50 years of artistic excellence, Apsaras Dance Company is proud to collaborate with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay to present Agápe.
Agápe is a multidisciplinary work exploring the beauty of human relationships: with oneself, with others, with nature and across cultures. It serves as an artistic response to contemporary challenges surrounding mental wellbeing, societal disconnection and digital alienation. The performance brings together leading Indian classical and crossover musicians from Singapore and India, performing alongside musicians from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Singaporean dancers from Apsaras Dance Company, featuring some guest dancers from India.
The title is inspired by the Greek word agápe (Greek: Ἀγάπη, pronounced uh-GAH-pay) which encapsulates the idea of deep human connection, encompassing the complexities of love, compassion and the spiritual ties that bind humanity beyond romance or familial relationships. In ancient Greek philosophy and theology, agápe represents the highest form of love: one that connects all human beings through empathy, sacrifice and shared humanity. As a poetic title and thematic anchor for the production, Agápe expresses a universality that resonates with audiences around the world.
This groundbreaking production represents a proudly Singaporean artistic endeavour led by Artistic Director and Cultural Medallion recipient Aravinth Kumarasamy, in collaboration with conductor Joshua Tan, a Young Artist Award recipient. The creative team also features distinguished international collaborators, including choreographer and guest dancer Rama Vaidhyanathan (India), principal dancer Mohanapriyan Thavarajah (Sri Lanka), music composer Dr Rajkumar Bharathi (India), music arranger and director Sai Shravanam (India), costume design by MOHA by Priyan (Singapore), set designer Wong Chee Wai (Singapore), and dramaturg Lim How Ngean (Australia).

Apsaras Dance Company
Apsaras Dance Company is bharatanatyam redefined. With our feet firmly planted in the rigorous foundations of the 2,000-year-old dance form bharatanatyam, we have made it our focus to push the boundaries of this tradition to create performances that are relevant to the times.
Our professional productions not only borrow from the great Indian texts, mythology and folklore but we also boldly explore themes relevant to contemporary audiences based on narratives with universal, cross-cultural appeal.
Where pertinent, we embrace technology in our shows. And we actively seek collaborations across geographies and cultures, particularly within the Asian context. All part of our mission to make bharatanatyam more accessible to a wider and more diverse audience.
While Singapore is truly home to Apsaras Dance Company, the world is quite literally our stage. Our productions have travelled to venues and prestigious festivals in some 40 countries, arguably making us one of the most travelled Singapore flag-bearers in the international arts scene.
Apsaras Dance Company is administered and managed by Apsaras Arts—a non-profit registered charity—and a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council’s annual Major Grant scheme.
Singapore Symphony Orchestra
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene with its 44-week calendar of events. From the 2026/27 season, the SSO will be led by Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu, the fourth Music Director in the orchestra’s history after Choo Hoey (1979–1996), Lan Shui (1997–2019) and Hans Graf (2020–2026).
In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and over 50 recordings, culminating in its 3rd place win in the prestigious Gramophone Orchestra of the Year Award 2021. In 2022, BBC Music Magazine named the SSO as one of the 23 best orchestras in the world.
The SSO performs over 60 concerts a year at such venues as the Esplanade Concert Hall and Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in its concert seasons. Its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres.
The SSO is part of the Singapore Symphony Group, which also manages the Singapore Symphony Choruses, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, the Singapore International Piano Festival and the biennial National Piano & Violin Competition.
