Synopsis

What lies within the conch shell? Lift it to your ear! The magical music of the sea awaits for all to hear!

First staged in 2024 to sold-out school audiences, A Sea of Stories once again invites students on a musical voyage through Southeast Asia. Step into the enchanting world of music and myths with the musicians from the Open Score Project with exciting narration by Jamil Schulze and Lian Sutton from Nusantara Theatrics.

Drawing from the vibrant cultures of Southeast Asia, this magical experience will showcase musical traditions and stories from Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. As we sail across the waters that connect us through three different folktales, A Sea of Stories invites you to rest your ear against the spiral of the conch—experience the tapestry of sounds, learn about our traditional stories and instruments, and celebrate the interconnectedness of the region through the universal language of music and storytelling.

Nusantara Theatrics

Website

Founded in 2022 by Co-Artistic Directors Jamil Schulze and Tan Guo Lian Sutton, Nusantara Theatrics is a creative platform, an artist-training and research laboratory, and a community. The name comes from an Old Javanese term, a compound of “Nusa” (Island) and “Antara” (Between), to mean “Between Islands” in reference to the archipelagic region of Maritime Southeast Asia. As such, their work and interests are driven by a curiosity about the “in-betweenness of things”.

Nusantara Theatrics approaches their creative explorations through the company’s ever developing methodology, PRISM Work, a blend of martial arts, mask work, theatre, and polysensorial imagery. Their collaborations and projects have been featured in Wonderfruit Festival (TH), Singapore Art Week (SG), HeritageFest (SG), the National Arts Council’s ArtsEverywhere initiative (SG), and at venues such as Esplanade (SG), Singapore Art Museum (SG), and the Singapore Pavilion of the 15th Gwangju Biennale (KR) as part of Zarina Muhammad’s installation.

Jamil Schulze

Jamil Schulze is the Co-Artistic Director of Nusantara Theatrics. He is a transdisciplinary artist, theatre-maker, and actor-movement trainer. He works across text and performance, theatrical stagings, television and film, movement work, installation and site activations and actor training. Often working in collaboration with other artists across mediums, his practice can be characterised by communal activations, syncretism, and the invitation to tune into the overlapping nature of our senses. Besides acting, he has contributed in various artistic capacities on works that have been featured in the Singapore Pavilion of the 15th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea) as part of Zarina Muhammad’s installation, Wonderfruit (Thailand), Esplanade Singapore and in the Singapore Art Museum (SAM).

Tan Guo Lian Sutton

Tan Guo Lian Sutton is the Co-Artistic Director of Nusantara Theatrics. He is a theatre-maker, artist, and educator. Lian has played a significant role in Singapore's theatre landscape as a performer, and at the 2017 Life! Theatre Awards he was honoured with the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Electra. His practice is further enriched by a Masters in Arts Pedagogy and Practice, where he researched the pre-performance rituals of professional actors. A trained martial artist from an early age, Lian brings a unique physical discipline to his craft, creating visceral and meaningful connections in both performance and his work as a teacher.
