Embrace the evolving and open nature of contemporary dance with Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 2) as they make their long-awaited return to Esplanade after 10 years! This world-renowned dance company presents a mixed bill which features three dynamic works, highlighting some of the most exciting voices and perspectives in dance today.

Get the chance to experience the work of Marcos Morau for the first time with Folkå (2021), a pulsating visual and auditory landscape centred around ritual, where an evocative story is told about community and its customs and traditions. A new voice for NDT 2, Botis Seva’s Watch Ur Mouth (2025) revolves around the role of criticism and our response to it in the process of creation, told through an amalgamation of hip hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance. His experiments with form, structure and theatrics result in an intricate and emotional language of movement. FIT (2018) by Alexander Ekman is a playful and dynamic exploration of what it truly means to fit in—and what happens when you don’t. Set to The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s swinging Take Five, this full-company work bursts with energy, bold costumes, and Ekman’s signature humour, wit, and absurdity.

Brimming with promise, vitality and creativity, NDT 2 is the second company of the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater, a leading contemporary dance organisation dedicated to creation, research and talent development. Known for the sharp precision and dynamic energy, the dancers of NDT 2 are ones to watch—don’t miss your chance to see them in action in this highly-anticipated performance!

Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 2) in Singapore is part of da:ns focus – Contemporary Dance, a weekend which embraces the evolving and open nature of contemporary dance.

Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT)

NDT is one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies. The group is based in The Hague, but performs for an international audience of 150,000 visitors in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. Since its founding in 1959 by Benjamin Harkarvy, Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie in collaboration with eighteen dancers from the Dutch National Ballet (then known as Nederlands Ballet), NDT has paved its own way in the contemporary dance field. Choreographers such as Glen Tetley and Hans van Manen have prominently left an avant-garde mark on the artistic face of the company. Their non-conformist, progressive productions put NDT on the national and international map.

Since then, the company has built a rich repertoire, consisting of more than 620 ballets by master choreographers Jiří Kylián and Hans van Manen, Sol León & Paul Lightfoot, Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke, Johan Inger, Medhi Walerski, Ohad Naharin, Alexander Ekman, Gabriela Carrizo, Franck Chartier, Hofesh Shechter, Edward Clug and Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar and many others.

Since 2021, NDT has been under artistic direction of Emily Molnar, who has launched the company into a new era of creativity. She initiated groundbreaking creations and collaborations such as Figures in Extinction with associate choreographer Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney/Complicité, and the renewed version of Into the Hairy with S-E-D. She also expanded NDT’s circle of associate choreographers, which originally included Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke, by inviting Marcos Morau, Jermaine Spivey, and Marne van Opstal & Imre van Opstal.

NDT 1 is a company of 28 uniquely versatile and virtuosic artists who deliver innovative choreography created in collaboration with world-renowned makers. NDT 2 acts as a bridge between emerging and mid-career artists providing a supportive environment for young dancers to develop further their practice, immersing themselves in numerous collaborations with a range of both emerging and established choreographers.

Marcos Morau

Choreographer and stage director Marcos Morau (Spain, 1982) is trained in photography, movement, and theatre. He has worked with La Veronal for more than 10 years now as director, choreographer and designer of sets, costumes, and lighting. In addition, he has been a guest artist at companies and theatres around the world, always carefully balancing performing arts and dance.

Morau was the youngest National Dance Prize winner in Spain and his creations have been awarded with numerous prizes, both at home and abroad. He is an associate artist at the Staatsballett in Berlin, where he will annually premiere a new creation in one of the largest companies in Europe. From the 2025–2026 season onwards, Morau will embark on a new collaboration with NDT as an associate choreographer.

Alexander Ekman

After a dance career with Royal Swedish Ballet, Cullberg Ballet and NDT 2, Alexander Ekman (Sweden, 1984) decided to solely focus on choreography. During the annual NDT’s Switch he was noticed for his talent and individual and original style. Ekman created quite some works for the company: for NDT 2 he created Flockwork (2006), the international hit Cacti (2010, nominated for the VSCD Zwaan Award 2010), Left Right Left Right (2012), Maybe Two (2013) FIT (2018) and Four Relations (2020), and for NDT 1, Definitely Two (2013). Ekman often composes music and develops decor for his own pieces.

Ekman works worldwide with companies such as Cullberg Ballet, Compañia Nacional de Danza Goteborg Ballet, Iceland Dance Company, Bern Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance, Ballet de l’Opéra du Rhin, Royal Swedish Ballet and the Norwegian National Ballet. In 2010, he created La La Land with former NDT dancer and choreographer Medhi Walerski for Göteborg Ballet. Ekman also creates for festivals such as the French Europa Danse and the Athens International Dance Festival.

Botis Seva

Olivier award-winning dance artist, choreographer and director Botis Seva (United Kingdom) was introduced to dance at age 15. He briefly performed with avant-garde dance as a dancer, before pursuing a career in choreography at 17 years old, choosing to chart his own path outside of conventional structures. He founded his own company, Far From The Norm, has created works for Scottish Dance Theatre and Sadler's Wells, among others, and has won various prizes.

Seva works within the realms of hip hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance. His distinct movement language has placed him at the forefront of hip hop dance theatre, both in the United Kingdom and internationally. He experiments with form, structure and theatrics, continuously recreating his approach to creativity in live as well as digital performances. Seva’s focus is on making a societal difference and using his autobiographical experiences to drive narratives.
