Synopsis

From Mazlina Buang to Afiq Noorazwa, and now Haziq Noorazwa; three generations, one rhythm. Echoes of Home traces the family’s journey through dance, from the graceful movements of the ’90s to the bold expressions of today. As styles evolve and stories unfold, this showcase celebrates the enduring heartbeat of family, where every step carries the memory of home.

Dance pieces that will be performed:

1. Tari Selamat Datang

Hailed as Atrika’s main repertoire. Tari Selamat Datang is a dance to welcome and celebrate special occasions. This dance is a joyous and grand dance piece that usually creates a bright atmosphere.

2. Inang Berputik

Originally choreographed by Mazlina Buang for the very first Gentarasa and now has been reworked by herself for Atrika’s 20th anniversary production back in 2014. This dance is about the growth and the blooming of oneself. One has to keep on moving towards a better self. Hoping to instill and be inspired by the integrity, femineity and grace of the dance, Mazlina Buang hopes to breathe new air into this restaging.

3. Kaki Ku Kaki Mu Berlangkah

This dance was choreographed by Mazlina Buang with the assistance of Afiq Noorazwa for Zapin D’Muara back in 2010. Its main focus was to focus on footwork and the swift essence of horses. This dance was then made into a part of Atrika’s repertoire as it was iconic and well received by the public and Atrika herself.

4. Tenunan Masa

Zapin ’s grounded grace and Samrah ’s joyful rhythm bloom within the city’s restless pulse. Like nature reflecting the ebb and flow of society, tradition bends but never breaks — adapting, renewing, and finding new life amid steel and speed. This dance becomes a bridge where Malay heritage and modern expression intertwine, reminding us that even in a fast-paced world, roots and progress can move as one.

Choreographed by Haziq Noorazwa, the work seeks to push boundaries and inspire the next generation, showing that tradition and contemporary art forms can coexist in harmony while remaining deeply rooted and continuing to evolve.

Muara Festival is presented by Era Dance Theatre in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay as part of Esplanade’s Pentas series.
