Synopsis
Widely regarded as two of jazz’s most innovative young artists, DOMi & JD BECK have redefined the genre with their fearless blend of intricate harmonies, breakneck rhythms, and playful internet-era sensibilities. The year they arrived on scene, they won over just about everyone: buttoned-up jazz fans, hip-hop heads, pop fans—you name it. Then, of course, came the GRAMMY Awards nominations for 2022’s NOT TiGHT, their debut record released by the iconic Blue Note Records in partnership with Anderson .Paak’s APESHIT, Inc. label. They were touted as the Gen Z ambassadors for jazz... up until they seemingly vanished.
What happened? Well, the answer comes in the form of their sophomore album, WHO ASKED?
Somehow both simpler and more complex than their debut, this album was two years in the making, born entirely from the duo’s home studio in Dallas, Texas. “This time around we felt like we had a pretty sharp idea of what we wanted the album to be before even starting,” say DOMi & JD BECK. “We wanted it orchestral, fully written out before even playing one note, with stronger songwriting intentions but just as crazy playing-wise and harmony-wise. We just wanted every note to mean something, and nothing left to chance.”
There are no big features on the album save for a small sinfonietta of seasoned classical players. What you hear—literally, as their voices also feature in their music for the first time—is all DOMi and JD BECK. You could almost call it chamber pop, if you multiplied the notes and destabilised the time signatures. Indietronica rooted in jazz with flourishes of hippie, flower-child freedom.
Turns out, their disappearance was not much of one, after all. They were just locked in, as they always are, to the music. Going back on the road, here’s a chance for fans to encounter this duo’s brilliance live in technicolour once again, no holds barred.
