Anak Pontianak, produced in 1958, is a famous horror film with a subtle touch of superstition.
It tells the story of a woman named Manis. As she screams in pain one night while giving birth to her twins and she senses her imminent death, she instructs her husband to do one last thing: to pull out a nail that has been stuck at the back of her neck for years.
What follows is a surprising transformation much to her husband’s disbelief before she “dies”.
Years pass, and one of the surviving twins, Petir, grows up strong with occasional displays of aggressive behaviour. Ten years later, he falls in love with a beautiful village girl, upsetting Dr Sulong, an elderly scientist, who harbours the same feelings for Halimah.
How will the story end for Petir and Halimah? Will Petir be able to keep his dark secret, or will he also transform into to protect the love of his life? And will Manis, who “has come back to life”, be able to protect her son?
