Synopsis

The Russell Tay Trio pays tribute to the timeless music of pianist and jazz luminary Bill Evans, whose modern interpretation of the piano trio continues to influence on jazz musicians today. The band will perform Evans’ original compositions alongside his innovative interpretations of a traditional jazz repertoire, showcasing his trademark elements of impressionist harmony, melodic lyricism and rhythmic interplay. The repertoire will feature iconic numbers like Turn Out the Stars, My Foolish Heart and Emily. Don’t miss out on an evening of jazz featuring Singapore’s finest jazz musicians.

Singaporean-born, Melbourne-based pianist Russell Tay graduated from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music (Monash University) in 2017, where he won the prize for Best Overall Student and the Bornstein Jazz Piano prize. In 2018, he completed his Honours Degree in jazz performance with first-class honours.

 

An active performer and composer in the Melbourne jazz scene, Tay leads his own trio and is a member of several critically acclaimed projects including The Radiohead Project and Elly Poletti. He has shared the stage with international musical icons from Terri-Lyne Carrington to virtuoso concert violinist Alexandre Da Costa. This year, for his return to Esplanade’s Jazz in July, Tay will be joined by Euguene Chew on bass and T’ Wayne on drums.
