Timeless Resonance: Shostakovich 5 with Jaap van Zweden & HIMARI
Synopsis
The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) is expanding its international presence this year with a grand tour to Singapore’s Esplanade. This marks ESO’s third visit to the Lion City. "Timeless Resonance: Jaap van Zweden & HIMARI" features the internationally acclaimed Japanese violin prodigy HIMARI as soloist. The performance opens with the Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor, a work celebrated for its "symphonic" depth and for capturing the evocative, icy temperament of the Scandinavian peninsula. As HIMARI navigates the concerto’s unconventional architecture, including a demanding cadenza within the heart of the first movement, the piece concludes in a flurry of rustic, rhythmic brilliance. The second half of the program marks a profound exploration of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Echoing the spirit of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Shostakovich’s masterpiece translates the struggle against adversity into a triumphant journey.
