Synopsis

Presenting a showcase of the unique repertoire of the Banaras Gharana, in tribute to late Pandit Rajan Mishra in the year of his 75th birth anniversary. The concert will be presented by the legendary vocal maestro’s sons, Pandit Ritesh Mishra and Pandit Rajnish Mishra. This will be an evening of khayal performance that will bring alive the unique style and compositions of a rich and storied gharana of Hindustani classical music.

Recipients of the Padma Bhushan award, Pandit Rajan Mishra along with his brother Pandit Sajan Mishra achieved global renown for introducing the world to the long form khayal compositions of the Banaras Gharana. Hailing from an ancient city and a 300 year old musical lineage that already boasted some of the greatest names in Hindustani classical music, the brothers carved a unique space for themselves as the most recognized vocal duo in Hindustani classical music, with a style that was marked by a deep, resonant vocal quality, intricate improvisations, and a seamless blend of voices that made it often difficult for listeners to distinguish where one brother's singing ended and the other's began.

Pandit Ritesh Mishra and Pandit Rajnish Mishra are globally established artists in their own right, and have been conferred the Sangeet Samriddhi Samman and the Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. They are carrying forward not just the legacy and repertoire of the Banaras Gharana but also the unique approach to jugalbandi (duet) performance of their father and uncle.
