Synopsis

The world's first traditional instrumental drama, Journey to the West, is a masterpiece composed, written, and directed by renowned musician Jiang Ying. Based on the historical tale of Xuanzang's pilgrimage to the West to seek Buddhist scriptures, this production uses ethnic instruments as its primary mode of performance. With 15 chapters, the drama employs multimedia and stage design to construct a virtual and real space, vividly portraying the great spirit of a master who sacrificed himself for the Dharma, with unwavering belief and perseverance. Featuring over 60 instruments from the Silk Road, including contemporary Chinese folk orchestra instruments, restored Dunhuang instruments, traditional Uyghur and Indian instruments, the drama showcases the diverse musical cultures along the Silk Road. This will be the first time the drama will be performed in Singapore, with all the musician and dancer from the China Gansu Province Dance Troup, together with numerous artists, presenting a heartfelt performance at the Esplanade Theatre on March 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2025.
