Synopsis

Soyoon Yoon, Piano
A native of South Korea, pianist Soyoon Yoon began her piano studies at age four. After moving to New Zealand, she was selected as a performer to played for the Prime Minister of New Zealand and was also received the Performance Excellence Award when graduating high school. Dr. Yoon was admitted at the University of Auckland where she completed her Bachelor (BM) and Bachelor of Music Honours in Piano Performance in 2007 under Dr. Rae de Lisle and Dr. Sharon Vogan. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Yoon earned a master’s degree (MM) in Piano Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Piano Pedagogy at Texas Tech University under Dr. Lora Deahl. Dr. Yoon is a recipient of the AT&T Chancellor’s fellowship which awarded to outstanding students during her master’s and doctorate in the United States. She served as an exclusive accompanist and teaching assistant Group Piano and Studio Class. In addition to this, she has been nominated to Phi Kappa Lambda ad selected for the member of Golden Key International Honour Society for the top 15% of students on campus. She has performed in piano solo recital, lecture recital, and chamber music concerts across the US, New Zealand, England, Singapore, and South Korea. Now she is currently working as a faculty member at Chung-Ang University, Baek-Seok University, and Seoul Cyber University. Among students, Dr. Yoon’s piano pedagogy class is said to be a must-take course during undergraduate studies, and she has been selected as an excellent teacher by all the institutions she currently teaches. Soyoon Yoon is also working at Korea Piano Pedagogy Association as a member of board of director.

 

Sae Hee Kim, Piano
Pianist Sae Hee Kim, a native of South Korea, graduated from Seoul National University (BM) and Indiana University (MM and Artist Diploma), where her studies were with Michel Block, Edmund Battersby, and Shigeo Neriki. She also went to Manhattan School of Music (Professional Studies Diploma), where she was a student of Arkady Aronov, and received her doctorate degree from University of Hartford, studying with Paul Rutman.

 

In 1994, she became the 1st prize winner of the prestigious KBS Young Artist Music Competition and subsequently made her KBS hall debut. In 1996, she won Indiana University Concerto Competition and The Herald Times called her “a pianist of beautiful sound and excellent technique” following her performance of the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 with IU Symphony Orchestra. As a winner of CSMTA Young Artist Piano Competition, Dr. Kim appeared with Hartford Symphony Orchestra conducted by Joseph Silverstein. She also performed with conductor Christopher Zimmerman, after winning Paranov Competition.

 

As a soloist, Dr. Kim has played recitals in many concert halls in Korea and in the United States. Her chamber music credits include performances with Emerson String Quartet, Seoul Chamber Orchestra, and Euterpe Woodwind Quintet. An avid supporter of new music, Dr. Kim has frequently performed 20th century compositions as a member of Novus Trio. Highlights of her contemporary music performances include critically acclaimed recital series, in which she played works by Crumb, Cage, Cowell, Ligeti, Boulez, Schonberg, Hovhaness, Glass, Chou-wen Chung, Jung Gil Kim and Toru Takemitsu.

 

Dr. Kim is the Music Director of the International Music Society Ensemble in Korea. She is very active nationally and internationally as an educator, having conducted master classes in the United States and Korea. Most recently, she presented master classes at Henderson State University and Ulsan University. In 2017, Dr. Kim served as Visiting Professor of Piano at University of California, Santa Barbara. Sae Hee Kim is currently a Professor of Piano at Seoul Jangsin University in Korea.
