Synopsis

Only the Wind Remembers is an installation of sails inspired by the kolek boat that was once a common sight along Singapore’s shores and used in races around neighbouring islands. While kolek racing continues to exist as a competitive sport in the Riau Archipelago with roots tracing back to the 1800s, its fading disappearance from Singapore’s waters mirrors the city state’s development of maritime and territorial boundaries.

The work explores the intricate relationship between the region’s maritime history and the powerful forces of nature that have shaped its destiny, reflecting on the country’s deep connections to the Malay Archipelago and its surrounding seas.
