Esplanade Presents
22 May – 23 Aug 2026
Esplanade Mall Level 3 Community Wall
Influenced by plants found on city streets, discarded items on the roadside and objects found in everyday life, Hans Chew studies the value of making things.
Among the variety of objects, there is a mix of functional and non-functional, necessary and not necessary, and those that are no longer needed — either discarded or left abandoned.
Hans uses simple, hand-made ceramic parts to soften the contours of these mass-produced industrial items. By combining the unique properties of ceramics with standardised products that have socially defined uses, he hopes to assemble a repository of objects that contemplate our anthropic relationship with things in the environment.
Hans Chew
Hans Chew is a ceramic artist based in Singapore. He graduated with a major in ceramics from Tama Art University, Tokyo, Japan.
Apart from making functional pottery which he views as his bread and butter, he also creates objects in search of himself. His works often deal with themes of foreignness, discord and nostalgia. As clay is a highly tactile medium, he strongly believes that the ability to think with both hands is equally as important as the ability to conceptualise and communicate one’s thoughts. Hans is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore.
